Joseph F. Perkins Home
– 1856, located south of Des Moines River on hill. Built by
Joseph Perkins about 1856 prior to the Civil War, said to be part of
"Underground Railroad". Perkins was an early settler of
Bonaparte having arrived in 1836 at the age of 20. See

27 Cresap
& Stadler & Opera House Entry - These buildings
still displaying their ornate facades were constructed in the mid 1890s
to replace several buildings destroyed in the disastrous fire of 1894. |

28 Dr. Bogle's
Bonaparte Drug Co. – 1894,
located in the heart of 1st St. next to the Cresap & Stadler
building. Later as W. S. Lane Drug and Sundries. Many of the fine wood display cases from the original store
still line the walls. Currently an antique shop. |

29 J. W. Whiteley
General Store – 1889
- Joseph W. Whiteley was born on April 28, 1826, in Yorkshire, England.
His trade in England was that of a woolen mill worker and he continue
that trade at the Meek Mill. in 1870 he began a small grocery business
which become one of the largest and most successful interests in southeastern Iowa. Now the
home of Township Grocery. |

30 J. W. Whiteley
Home – 18__
- Joseph W. Whiteley came to Bonaparte in the spring of 1857. In 1870 Mr. Whiteley
first engaged in the grocery business on the present site of the residence in which he died. |

31 Mormon
Pioneer Trail – In
1846, the Mormons, led by Brigham Young, came up the river as far as
Bonaparte and crossed the river March 5, 1846. Some stayed at a
settlement near Reed's Creek, east of Bonaparte. Some worked for a time
in the Woolen Mills taking woolen cloth in payment for their labor.
Others, brick masons, left their mark on the community. |
